Bake up a storm
Get hands-on with an easy baking recipe.
For many families, time spent together in the kitchen can be the best time to strengthen bonds and spend quality time together. Consider making edible gold medal biscuits this Father’s Day. Not only are they fun and easy to make, but you can also have a little ceremony and award each other the edible medals for being the best family anyone could ask for. So break out the flour and start baking!
Edible gold medal biscuit recipe:
Ingredients:
-
100g of plain flour
-
¼ teaspoon of baking powder
-
60g of butter, softened
-
75g of caster sugar
-
1 egg
-
¼ teaspoon of vanilla extract
-
15g of cocoa powder
-
A sprinkling of golden lustre powder
-
100g of icing sugar
Directions:
-
Combine the flour and baking powder in a bowl. In another bowl, mix the butter, caster sugar, egg, vanilla extract, and cocoa powder with an electric mixer. Gradually add the flour mix until incorporated.
-
Bring the dough together with your hands, then place on top of cling film and flatten into a disk shape. Wrap in the cling film and chill for 1 hour until firm.
-
Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius. Roll out the chilled dough between two sheets of baking paper, then cut out the biscuits using a 6cm cutter.
-
Place the biscuits on a large, lined baking tray and bake in the oven for 8-10 minutes.
-
Remove the biscuits from the oven. While they're still warm, cut out a little hole on the top of each one. You can use a 1cm round piping nozzle to do this.
-
Leave to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then place on a cooling rack and leave to cool completely. Shake over the lustre powder to give the biscuits a gold shimmer.
-
To decorate, mix the icing sugar with 1 tablespoon of cold water. Spoon into a piping bag and ice the biscuits. Once decorated, loop a ribbon or string through the hole of each biscuit and tie it at the other end.
Go on a scenic bike ride
Explore these cycling trails around Singapore.
When cycling along with your family members, you won’t even notice you are working out. In addition, cycling helps your children develop strong, healthy bones and muscles. This Father’s Day, hop on a bicycle and explore these beginner-friendly leisure trails.
Changi Airport Connector: Opened by Changi Airport, this 3.5km cycling and jogging path links the airport to East Coast Park and the Park Connector Network. It also features the Changi Jurassic Mile — the city’s largest permanent outdoor display of life-sized dinosaurs.
Changi Beach Park: Changi Beach Park is about 3.3km long, and stretches from Changi Point to Changi Ferry Terminal while overlooking Pulau Ubin. With stretches of pristine white beaches dotted with coconut palms, soak in the kampong ambience of one of Singapore’s oldest coastal parks.
Punggol Waterway Park: Be treated to stunning panoramic views of lush greenery and open spaces at Punggol Waterway Park. Cycle on the well-maintained tracks along the promenade at both sides of the waterway, or sit on the many benches placed around the park and enjoy the breeze.
Rower's Bay: Rower’s Bay is the ideal spot for its scenic and children-friendly tracks. The 60km track is the first phase of the Round Island Route (RIR), a continuous 150km park connector that circles the island, set to be completed by 2035. When you need a break from cycling, bask in the cool breeze at the lookout pavilion and try to spot native wildlife.
Have fun by the sea
Recover from the stress of everyday life at the beach.
There are many other reasons why families need to go to the beach — from building fond memories to the feeling of total relaxation that comes with spending a day by the sea, there's no better way to celebrate than with these fun beach-themed activities.
Go on a scavenger hunt: The beach is full of hidden treasures. If your pint-sized pirate isn't quite ready for ocean exploration, then a land-based scavenger hunt is a great way to spend the afternoon together. Start the day off with easy-to-locate items and slowly work your way toward more obscure finds.
Musical towels: This activity gives a beachy twist to musical chairs. Simply set up towels in a circle (with one fewer towel than the number of players), turn on some music, and have your family walk over them. Once the music stops, you must lay down on the nearest towel. The player without a towel is eliminated. Remove a towel after each round until you’ve got one player left standing.
Sandcastle building: Sandcastle building is one of those beach activities that can stretch on throughout a whole day. You can keep coming back to it between dips in the sea (and other beach games!). It’s a great way for the whole family to play together with a common goal rather than competing against each other. Make sure you come armed with a variety of buckets and spades and other sand decorating paraphernalia. Of course, you can always turn sandcastle building into a competition, if the mood takes you!
Try your hand at sand Pictionary: All you need is a nice shady spot, some soft sand, and a little creativity for this fun game. Start by writing down a list of beach-themed objects on separate pieces of paper (sandcastle, starfish, crab, beach ball et cetera). Fold them up and put them in a bucket. Each family member then picks out a piece of paper from the bucket and draws in the sand the object that’s written on it.
Plan a movie night
Recreate the movie theatre experience at home!
Is there anything better than curling up with your family to watch a great movie? Father’s Day movie night deserves to be special — which is why we’ve put together the ultimate list of at-home movie night tips for an unforgettable event.
Pick your movie in advance: Instead of wasting 30 minutes trying to find something to watch, have an idea of what you want to watch beforehand! Come up with a list of movies you think Dad will enjoy and allow the entire family to vote and decide. Still not sure what movie to watch? Popular family movie night options include animated features like Finding Nemo, Onward, and The Incredibles. Superhero blockbusters like Guardian's of the Galaxy 2 and The Avengers, sci-fi flicks like Star Wars, action movies like Indiana Jones, and comedies like Mrs Doubtfire, also never disappoint!
Upgrade your basic movie popcorn: Preparing snacks with your family can make for great bonding time before the movie starts. Remember to pick easy recipes your kids can help with. Popcorn, for example, is a crowd favourite and simple to prepare. Classic butter always works, but for the best movie night at home, try upgrading your flavours beyond that. If you want to whip out your chef’s hat, give one of these
50 flavoured popcorn recipes a try.
Go big! Use a projector: Want to take things up a notch and really recreate that movie theatre vibe? Then you’ll want to use a projector! If you don’t have one, why not try building a smartphone projector with an old shoebox and some office supplies. For a tutorial on how to make a smartphone projector, click

Arrange a good set-up: Create a comfy viewing space for everyone. Keep it as cushy as possible by moving the bedroom pillows and throws to the living room couch. If you’re using more than one speaker, consider a triangle type placement around your usual sitting area. This means that the sound should be coming at you from all sides giving your family an immersive movie experience.
Many of these ideas for what to do on Father's Day are fun and interactive. But the best part of all is that these activities allow you to spend real quality time with your loved ones, which is hands down, the best present.
